2. "RE: Better, Easier upgrade process"

I just upgraded from 808 to 809. The process still sucks. Sucks. Not very descriptive. So, here goes. Annoying that I have to copy certain files (but, not that it is not clear what files I should/should not copy) from the old to the new.All (even Adobe and Microsoft) software is easier to upgrade/update. I am not a UNIX weenie, I am a Mac OS X weenie. I want "click and go" and not "1 page of command line instructions". Dave Barnes 1.303.744.9024 |

We've got this on our To Do List, but I wouldn't expect it in any 8.0.x release. We have some internal functionality for supporting "web update," and we've also discussed using the current Import wizard (which imports v7 installations) to import v8 installations too, for a somewhat simpler upgrade process (which would be: (1) install the new version in a different folder, (2) exit the old one, (3) start the new one, and (4) click Import in the new one to import your profiles, databases, users, etc.). A full "web update" feature would require quite a lot of development, and we hope to have it in the next major release of Sawmill, at least for non-Windows systems (Web update is more difficult to implement in Windows, but on Windows this isn't nearly as much of a problem, because you can just run the latest installer to update the existing installation). That doesn't mean you have to anything with the command line, though--the installation process is typically done from the Finder. (1) install the new version in a different folder, (2) exit the old one, (3) copy the appropriate files and folders from the old LogAnalysisInfo to the new one (profiles, Databases, users.cfg, preferences.cfg, system.cfg, license.cfg), and (4) start the new version. No Terminal required.
