INSTALLATION
-----------------------------------------------------

(Note: if you are upgrading an existing Sawmill, installation, you do not need to do anything special-- just install the new version. It will replace the old Sawmill program files, leaving the data files intact, so you configurations, databases, and other data will be preserved.)

Sawmill ships in a BinHexed self-extracting archive. You can unBinHex it using a program like Aladdin Systems StuffIt Expander (http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html). Expander will also automatically uncompress the result, but if you are not using Expander, you can uncompress it manually by double-clicking the installer icon. This will result in a folder called sawmill, containing the Sawmill application and this README file.

If you plan to use Sawmill in web-server mode (recommended), you can start using Sawmill immediately by double-clicking the application. A window will appear with the Sawmill logo, and a Use Sawmill button. Click the Use Sawmill button to open your browser and access Sawmill's web server.

If you plan to use Sawmill as an CGI program, instead of using web-server mode, then you need to use the SawmillCommandLine program, which is a Terminal program. Move SawmillCommandLine to your web server's CGI directory, rename it to sawmill.cgi, and run it as a CGI program, something like this:

  http://my.web.server.com/cgi-bin/sawmill.cgi

To determine where your CGI directory is, and other details about how Sawmill interacts with your web server, it may be useful to consult the Web Servers section of the online documentation (see THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION, below).

In either case, when you access the URL from your web browser, Sawmill will lead you through the startup process (which is simpler in web server mode than in CGI mode).

THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION
-----------------------------------------------------

During installation, it may be useful to consult the online documentation. Since you can't use your own copy of Sawmill's online documentation until Sawmill is actually up and running, we've provided an Internet-accessible copy on our web server:
